TIME Magazine and The Godfather of Propaganda

Last week TIME magazine published an article that can be considered a hubristic victory lap by the left. The article not only demonstrates the complete capture of the institutions by the left but openly brags about how they used those institutions to make sure they got their candidate elected. All in the name of protecting democracy.

We are in a negative Christian world. All other things being equal, being Christian works against you. This is largely due to the propaganda and institutional capture by the left and progressivism.

The institutions that have influence over the lives of Americans were once in favor of Christianity, then become neutral on Christianity, and are now and for some time against Christianity. Obvious things like pop culture, the media, and academia are anti-Christian and anti-conservative. This has been known for a while has several different names. Curtis Yarvin and Michael Malice would call it “The Cathedral,” Eric Weinstein refers to it as “The DISC,” and Andrew Breitbart referred to it as “The Complex.” Each one of these guys mentioned has a different worldview. Yarvin is a Monarchist, Malice is an Anarchist, Weinstein is some sort of liberal, and Breitbart was a tea-partier. Yet they all saw the institutional capture. They all saw the left has control.

The TIME magazine article is fascinating for many reasons. It validates Trump on some level when he said they were all colluding against him.

In a way, Trump was right.

There was a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that both curtailed the protests and coordinated the resistance from CEOs. Both surprises were the result of an informal alliance between left-wing activists and business titans. The pact was formalized in a terse, little-noticed joint statement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO published on Election Day. Both sides would come to see it as a sort of implicit bargain–inspired by the summer’s massive, sometimes destructive racial-justice protests–in which the forces of labor came together with the forces of capital to keep the peace and oppose Trump’s assault on democracy. (TIME)

The article lays out exactly how the left took over the control of the election in all aspects. From changing laws to pressuring social media companies. Remember when Twitter banned the New York Post? This is all relevant to the election and worth keeping in mind. However, when I read the article I realized all the tactics employed were the fulfillment of one man’s ideas, Edward Bernays.

Edward Bernays The Godfather of Propaganda

Edward Bernays was a pioneer in the field of Public Relations and Propaganda in the 1930s. His two most famous books Propaganda and Crystalizing Public Opinion. Both books were and are highly influential in the fields of marketing and journalism.  The man who developed theories for manipulating the masses’ uncle was the most famous psychiatrist in history. His uncle was Sigmund Freud. Bernays was such an influential figure in propaganda that famous and evil Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels had Bernay’s books in his library. To this day his books are taught in journalism programs across the country. The man’s legacy is all over the media, and what the TIME Magazine article outlines is perhaps the crowning achievement of his legacy.

Bernay’s ideology can be tough to pinpoint exactly. But it’s safe to say he was a progressive. He believed in experts and thought experts ought to rule the country. In essence, because the United States is a democracy, and not a monarchy or aristocracy, the average citizen has become king(Propaganda, pg 47). Therefore whoever influences the masses in essence, becomes the king. And that king ought to be a progressive expert.

And how should the experts manipulate the masses? Propaganda, “Propaganda is the executive arm of the invisible government.”(Propaganda, pg 48) However, it must be understood, propaganda to Bernays is not just ads or articles. It is Institutional capture. Bernays states that people are a part of groups, and by influencing one group you can spread your message to other groups. If you can capture academia and spread your message there, everyone who goes through the college system will spread that ideology to their other groups. It’s what we’ve seen in the United States for the past sixty years.

Yet it must be remembered that these thousands of groups interlace…The opinions which he receives as a Rotarian, he will tend to disseminate at the other groups in which he may have influence.(Propaganda, pg 44)

For a long time, conservatives and Christians have known that the college system was full of leftists propagandizing the youth. But it was always assumed that “once they got into the real world” those ideas would fade away. This clearly has not happened. Instead, the propagandized have infected their employers, places of worship, and families with these ideologies.

Propaganda and Democracy

It is important to note about Bernays. He does not believe that propaganda is an aspect of democracy. It is an “important element.”

The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.  (Bernays, Propaganda pg 40)

Through the use of propaganda, it is imperative that a minority of experts shape our democracy and culture to the appropriate ends. “The instruments by which public opinion is organized and focused may be misused. But such organization and focusing are necessary to orderly life.” (Propaganda pg 39) Institutional control and propaganda are tools to be used by the “good” guys. The TIME article reiterates this fact:

…even though it sounds like a paranoid fever dream–a well-funded cabal of powerful people, ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information. They were not rigging the election; they were fortifying it. And they believe the public needs to understand the system’s fragility in order to ensure that democracy in America endures. (TIME)

TIME is quite frankly telling us a small group of people influenced perceptions, steered media coverage, and controlled the flow of information. To show this is direct Bernays below are the quotes from TIME next to excerpts from Bernay’s Propaganda:

“A well-funded cabal of powerful people… to Influenced Perceptions”

“It is the intelligent minorities which need to make use of propaganda continuously and systematically. In active proselytizing minorities in whom selfish interests and public interests coincide lie the progress and development of America.” (Propaganda pg 57)

“steer media coverage and control the flow of information”

“To avoid such confusion, society consents to have its choices narrowed to ideas and objects brought to its attention through propaganda of all kinds”(Propaganda pg 39)

“They were not rigging the election; they were fortifying it. And they believe the public needs to understand the system’s fragility in order to ensure that democracy in America endures.”

Only through the wise use of propaganda will our government, considered as the continuous administrative organ of the people, be able to maintain that intimate relationship with the public which is necessary in a democracy. (Propaganda pg 126)

These are the tactics used by the left and progressives to control the citizens of the United States and by extension the government. They’ve captured the institutions that distribute information and inform thought. The left is not ascending it has ascended. It has taken the words of Edward Bernays to heart and followed through on his plan. Bernays laid the  blueprint on how to “fortify democracy.” And the left followed through.

What is to be done?
